MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT MRS. NEWTONA TURNER
It is a privilege and honor to be the current President of the Krio Descendants Union of North Carolina (KDUNC), a chapter of the Krio Descendants Global Union. KDUNC is a family of Krios that live and work together throughout the vast expanse of North Carolina. The chapter is sub-divided into three regions: Charlotte, Piedmont Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point) and the Raleigh-Durham areas.
Who are The Krios?
The Krios of Sierra Leone are descendants of freed slaves who were brought to re-settle in the Western Area of Sierra Leone between 1787 and 1885.
The freed African slaves arrived in four waves in Sierra Leone. First to arrive were the Black Poor from England. The second set came from the United States of America traveling through Nova Scotia in Canada. The third group to arrive was the Maroons from Jamaica. The final group of settlers to arrive were the Liberated Africans who were recaptives who had been illegally enslaved on board slave ships. They were rescued by the Royal Navy and sent to enjoy their free status in Sierra Leone.
The freedmen called their new settlement ‘Freetown’ and established an ethnicity of Krios, a unique people with a rich language, heritage, and culture.
